Abstract

series of decisions that determine how and what sort of software is acquired. There is a decision to be made about whether the application should be licensed or custom developed, which is often related to whether the application is a source of competitive advantage or not. Increasingly though organizations are choosing a third option, and this is application modernization. Application modernization involves taking existing applications and revitalizing them and giving them a place in the future enterprise architecture. In practice this typically means taking an on-premise application and adapting it to run on cloud infrastructure. This can be done in such a way that the application is then more secure, cheaper to operate and easier to integrate.

For software vendors it is critical to understand why customers choose to modernize applications, rather than acquiring new ones. Application modernization is a threat to software revenues, so software vendors must take action to ensure their products can thrive in architectures that combine modern applications, custom applications and modernized applications.
